Houston, MO— Texas County Memorial Hospital’s Mountain Grove Clinic sponsored sports physicals for area high school and middle school athletes at the Mountain Grove Clinic on Wednesday, June 6.
Sports physicals were offered between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. No appointment was necessary for students to receive physicals. Mountain Grove Schools covered the $5 cost of their student athletes
The Mountain Grove Clinic has been offering sports physicals to the community and surrounding areas for several years. This year, they gave 80 sports physicals, more than in recent years.
Lisa Merritt, clinic manager, attributes this jump in the number of students seen to being open during the lunch hour.
“In previous years, we were closed for a lunch break. This year we stayed open, and we had a lot of people come during that time,” Merritt said.
Three providers, Jose Atiles, M.D., Sara Openshaw, FNP, and Tracey Arwood, CNM provided excellent care to the students and helped the event run smoothly.
“We feel very important that we get to help our local students. We get to make sure they are in good health to start their sports,” Merritt said. “It’s very important to us that we get the chance to promote a healthy school year.”
“This event always provides a good opportunity to talk to students about other healthy lifestyle choices too,” Arwood said.
Openshaw, who has been working this event for three years, explained that every year it seems to go smoother. The students become more familiar with the process, so everyone knows what to expect.
“I love serving the community and being involved in the schools,” Openshaw said.
